Australian values based on freedom, respect, fairness and equality of opportunity are central to our community remaining a secure, prosperous and peaceful place to live.
Our Australian Flag belongs to everyone who calls Australia home.
It is used for all official ceremonies. It is used at the Olympics as the official flag. It is used for a sports community as well as draped over the coffins of fallen soldiers Defending us.
We believe it is the only flag Australia should fly.
The Australian flag is a dark blue flag featuring the Union Jack in the upper-left corner, a large, seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below the Union Jack, and the Southern Cross constellation on the right.
The Union Jack acknowledges Australia's historical ties to Great Britain, while the Commonwealth Star symbolizes the federation of Australia's states and territories. The Southern Cross constellation represents Australia's geographical location in the Southern Hemisphere and has cultural significance.
Key Features and Their Meanings
Union Jack - Located in the canton (upper-left quarter) nearest the flagpole, it symbolizes Australia's historical connection to the United Kingdom.
Commonwealth Star - This large, white star beneath the Union Jack has seven points, representing the six states and the territories of Australia.
Southern Cross - On the right side of the flag (the "fly"), five white stars form the Southern Cross constellation. Four of these stars have seven points, while the central one has five points. This constellation is a navigational feature in the Southern Hemisphere and also holds significance in Indigenous culture.
Service-Specific Flags
Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We've golden soil and wealth for toil
Our home is girt by sea
Our land abounds in nature's gifts
Of beauty, rich and rare
In history's page let every stage
Advance Australia fair
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands
For those who've across the seas
We've boundless plains to share
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair
